You couldn’t shake a virtual social media stick last summer without hitting a fashion post featuring baskets and woven handbags. The staple of old French ladies, country housewives from an episode of Miss Marple, and eternal fashion darling, Jane Birkin, the humble basket became every Instagrammer’s favourite accessory and with fashion blogger favourites popping up on the pages of Vogue, there were soon waiting lists for the most desirable, must-have, rustic designs.
The trend shows no sign of going away this summer, in fact quite the opposite, with new styles and high street designs ‘inspired’ by last year’s cult bags (homages to Cult Gaia’s Ark bag, itself a reproduction of a vintage Japanese picnic basket, will be popping up all over the high street). And since last year’s big hitters sold out months before we mere mortals glimpsed them on Instagram, now is the time to get ahead of the game. I know, beach bags in February, but we need something to remind us that the sun will get here one day!
If you follow Jamie Beck on Instagram, the chances are that, like me, you dream of moving to Provence and wandering the streets of a quaint French town on market days, basket in hand, baguette balanced just so, skin glowing, *sigh*. If, also like me, life just isn’t going to hand you a rosebud complexion and the keys to a romantic Provencal garret, the next best thing (trust me on this) is a 50s summer dress and a basket.
Incredibly versatile, a basket is perfect for days at the beach, popping to the farmer’s market, and even taking to the office. Smaller, bijou designs are as at home at a wedding as they are at a music festival, and larger, more abstract bags can add a serious dose of fashion to even the simplest of outfits.
So, where to find the perfect bag? From high street to high-end and everything in between, we’ve done all of the searching so you don’t have to. Happy clicking!
