So why don’t we start off with some tips to make you dazzle inside and out this Christmas? Starting with the skin.
On cleansed and moisturised skin apply Milani Prime Light Strobing & Pore Minimizing Face Primer to ensure your skin lights-up from within.
Follow this up with your favourite foundation or tinted moisturised. For a long-lasting effect and flawless coverage use a good beauty blender to work in the foundation.
Give those cheeks a flush of colour by applying one of my favourite blushers, Milani Baked Blush in ‘Luminoso’. It works well on pretty much all skin tones. However for those of you with deeper skin tones you may want to use MAC Cosmetics Casual Colour blusher in ‘Hi Jinks!’.
And of course you’ll want your cheekbones highlighted to catch the light as you dance the night away in those disco lights! For a beautiful highlighted effect use in either ‘Skinny Dip’ or ‘Tan Lines’.
For the Eyes
In softly lit bars, restaurants and dance floors, subtle makeup colours won’t be as important as they simply won’t show up. What’ll be important is to ensure that your features are defined enough to stand out – you’ll need to enhance your eye contours: think eyeliner, lashes, eye-socket contouring and highlighting/sprinkling of magic dazzle-dust on your lids.
Once you’ve applied your choice of eyeshadow onto the lids top them up with some sparkle. One of my all-time favourites is Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow – pretty much any shade works wonders although my personal favourite is ‘Smouldering Satin‘ – it glides on like a dream with almost no fall-outs due to its liquid texture. It’s a fantastic addition to your festive makeup kit.
An idea on how to use this eyeshadow in a different way would be run the applicator along the lash-line on top of your eyeliner, this can be done on both top and lower lash-lines. Your sparkly eyes will mesmerise everyone and leave you feeling (and looking) fantastic.
For eyeliner ensure that it’s waterproof as you don’t want any under-eye staining. A fantastic option is CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner or Rimmel London Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in ‘Noir’.
Line the eyes starting on the outer lash-line corner, really fluffing those lashes and getting the liner in between them. As you approach the middle of the lash-line ease off the pressure so that the liner starts melting and thinning. By the time you’ve reached the inner-eye the liner should have blended invisibly into the lash-line. For a deeper line press the pencil a bit harder and make the liner two to three times thicker on the outer edge of the lash-line than elsewhere, this will also create an instant eye-lifting effect.
If your liner gets wobbly disguise it by smudging it in with a smudging brush such as Morphe E35 Detail Smudge Brush – an essential for your makeup brush collection.
If you’re not going to wear false eyelashes (although I really think that you should – and we’ll be sharing a product review piece soon with practical tips on how to apply), then curl your lashes for that extra-long effect and apply a waterproof or long-lasting mascara such as L’Oréal Paris Lash Architect. Sweep two to three coats on, zig-zagging from the roots upwards and your eyes will stand out beautifully.
Be brave with your lip colour choices – go for either really sparkly and shiny or deep bold colours such as red, berry or dark plum. Increase the longevity of the colour by applying a long-lasting lip pencil all over the lips before topping it up with the lipstick of your choice. For a high-shine finish choose something like Kevyn Aucoin The Molten Metals Lip Colour or M&S Rosie for Autograph Lipshine in ‘Delicious Kisses‘.
A gorgeous attention-grabbing deep colour is by Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G in ‘Night Crimson’ or NARS Velvet Lip Pencil in Cruella. Once the lipstick has been applied use a top-coat to ensure longevity – such as Lipcote lipstick sealer.
Once your makeup is done set it to make it last using Urban Decay All Nighter long-lasting makeup setting spray.
Festive hairstyles are all about creating a sexy mane cascading down the shoulders, or for shorter hair – styling it in a funky, modern way. Here are some tips on getting your hair Xmas party ready.
A good blow-dry is a must! If you have fine hair use volumising mousse or spray before blow-drying, such as Bumble and bumble Thickening Spray.
If curling your hair leave the ends straight for a more modern curl – a great curling wand is BaByliss Pro Ceramic Dial A Heat Curling Tong.
Choose a thicker barrel for a looser modern wave effect, or use the BaByliss Wave Envy tool to create long-lasting relaxed waves super-easily.
To ensure your hair dazzles as much as your makeup spritz on a bit of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine.
If your hair isn’t as long as you’d like you can opt for clip-in extensions. I personally love these, especially as I have fine hair, they instantly make me look sexier and younger. My particular favourite is an attachable ponytail – LullaBellz have a great range of 22” ponytails in 25 shades.
And finally don’t forget to have a whole heap of festive fun – don’t be afraid of bolder colours, shinier textures and bigger hair. Christmas is the perfect time to experiment and do something differently, it’s great to step out of your comfort zone once in a while and really go for it. And enjoy the experience!
